Humans spray pesticides to kill Zika virus carrying mosquitoes and crop-destroying pests. Beekeepers aren’t always alerted to spraying, and the chemicals are killing honey bees. Alert systems aren’t working, as seen in the loss of bees in South Carolina this past fall and by losses reported to us by beekeepers we talked to.
Our solution is Bee-Safe, an automatic bee hive defense system. This patent-pending system can detect pesticide before it reaches the hive and triggers defenses, such as a misting arm to keep pesticide off the hive and keep the hive cool. A small hive door also closes, encouraging bees to stay inside the hive while a positive pressure system with a filter and fan provides clean, pesticide-free air to the hive. The beekeeper does not need even need to be home.
